Hot Mess by Rowan McAllister

THE NEXT six weeks were a little anticlimactic. All of the sudden, he didn’t have anything to fill his days anymore. He’d learned pretty quickly he wasn’t going to be able to get even a semidecent retail job without his certificate in his hand. There were too many college kids out of school for the summer looking for work. And he couldn’t even think about taking classes at the community college until he had his results, so he was kind of stuck in a holding pattern.
To help make up for the fact that he was still mooching off of Sam, Cameron took on all the household chores and cooked all the meals they ate together. He even did a bit of the yard work, though the lawn mower kind of scared the shit out of him, and he didn’t exactly know what he was doing. Sam always said it was the thought that counted, but Cameron could tell the guy was laughing at him on the inside. Cameron didn’t mind. Like he’d said before, Sam was pretty damned hot when he laughed.
Though he was a little ashamed to admit it, Cameron did break down and go out partying with his friends a few more times during those weeks. It was always on the nights when he knew Sam was out with his own friends, and Cameron was alone at the house, bouncing off the walls, imagining Sam hooking up with someone. He managed not to get completely wasted on those few occasions, and he only swapped a couple of blowjobs with random guys to take the edge off. He didn’t fuck any of them, but he still felt guilty about it afterward, like he’d somehow failed himself.
The day his certificate and official test scores finally arrived, Cameron was bouncing off the walls for a different reason. He’d already checked some of his scores online, so he knew he’d passed, but he hadn’t shared any of that with Sam yet, and he could hardly wait for Sam to get home from work so he could show him the envelope.
When he heard Sam’s car pull up, Cameron stopped what he was doing in the kitchen, grabbed the envelope off the breakfast bar, and rushed to the door, practically vibrating with excitement. Sam was on the phone when he came in, so Cameron waited impatiently—with the envelope behind his back—for him to finish.
“You lied. This isn’t a much-needed vacation. This is a setup,” Sam said into his phone as he smiled at Cameron in greeting. “You know, I am capable of getting my own dates.” He paused and Cameron could hear someone talking, although he couldn’t quite make out what the person was saying. “A long weekend, out in the middle of nowhere, seems a bit extreme. What if we end up hating each other?” The voice talked again, and Sam laughed throatily as the happy smile fell from Cameron’s face. “Yeah, yeah. He was pretty hot. Okay Ryan, look, I’m home now,
